Since 2003, a man in southwest China has carried his paralysed mother on his back as he goes from town to town looking for a job.

The family of two from a village in Chongqing’s Qijiang district have found an opportunity at a regular life after hearing about the news that a government subsidised house is being built for them, according to South China Morning Post.

Wang Xianqiang, 37 years old, has been given a job as a cleaner. “Mum is my whole world,” he said. His mother, Tian Jinggui, was paralysed by a fall when Wang was 14 years old. His father then cared for her until his death in 2003. Stricken by grief, his mother stopped speaking to everyone except her son.

Wang, who was working in Zhejiang province in the east, returned to Chongqing bring her with him into the city to find a job. But since his mother suffered carsickness, Wang carried her everywhere on his back.

Wang tell prospective employers that he’s willing to accept lower wages. But he would also ask for flexible hours to return home to cook meals for his mother and carry her on walks. Wang said that the employers thought he was asking for too much.

He found a stable job at a clothing factory after the employer took pity on him in 2015, but the factory only opened for production every six months.

When the two of them returned to Funiu in August while the factory was closed, the village committee helped Wang apply for welfare, as well as providing him with a job that allows him to be able to spend time with his mother.

Chinese social media users have also been moved by Wang’s determination to care for his mother, with users on Weibo saying they want to donate wheelchairs.

Tian is one of at least 85 million people living with disabilities in China.
