There is no easy way to secure an employee's loyalty, making it a crucial goal every employer must achieve. Turnovers cost employers millions of ringgit every year, and SMEs cannot afford to lose great employees.

Though employers can always offer financial incentives to increase employee loyalty, they should also look into the organisation's culture and benefits.

Employees who are loyal to your organisation are employees with greater levels of productivity, synergy and well-being. Your organisation will reap the benefits for many years to come if you put in the work towards inspiring loyalty now.

These are the four ways to inspire loyalty among your employees:

Pay your employees in full and on time.

This one is a no-brainer, but payroll issues are widespread and affect the relationship between employees and employers. Many Malaysian workers had experienced paycheck issues before, whether they were paid inadequately or received a paycheck that's days late.

If your company has faced this problem before, you should consider making payroll and automated process to prevent the same issue from happening in the future and save everyone's time. The faster and more accurately your employees receive their salary, the more they will trust you as a leader.

Recognise an employee's job well done.

Keeping employees motivated is critical in inspiring a culture of loyalty. However, motivation can be a tricky thing to maintain during a pandemic. Covid-19 has left many employees feeling lost and unrecognised. Did you know that one-third of workers did not receive any recognition for their work in the last three months?

If one of your staff respects you as a leader, it also means they value your praise and feedback in kind. The two foundations of a working employee-employer relationship are recognition and honest assessments. Provide these two freely to your employees, and they will compensate you with a noticeable uptick in employee loyalty.

These tips will make it easier for you to earn your employees' loyalty.

Provide a chance for employees to have increased autonomy

Nobody wants to be micromanaged. It's a sure sign of a lack of trust from the leadership. It is no surprise that almost 70% of all workers who have experienced micromanagement say they have considered resigning as a result.

It would help if you adopted a transparent policy on worker autonomy: the more your employees prove that they can handle freedom, the more freedom you will provide.

After a particularly well-performed project, let the team members play a bigger role in choosing the direction of the next project.

As a leader, it is our duty to oversee business operations. However, we need to know where our responsibilities end and our employees' begin. Loyalty begins when both our team and we know exactly where that line is.

Nip culture issues in the bud.

No employee wants a boss who does nothing but pays the bills. They want a leader who can play an active role in maintaining the happiness and health of the workplace. The leader owes it to their team to find out and squash any problems that arise in the company's culture. Many will have come to expect such behaviour from a leader.

The best way to manage this issue is by maintaining an active relationship with every member of your team. You should regularly check in on a casual basis. If there are serious problems afoot, you will start to notice once you have maintained a friendly relationship with everyone.

Some cultural issues need intervention from the leadership, and the sooner you intervene, the more your team will recognise your efforts.

Employee loyalty is not just something we achieve; it is something we earn and then maintain. Every takeaway listed here is just a component of a bigger strategy: Trust your team and allow them to trust you. Once you understand that, loyalty will start to come naturally.
