1. Employee relations
An organisation depends on secure employee-employer relationships. An HR professional needs to identify and resolve employee concerns so the work environment can be better for employees and employers.
They will also need to take care a lot of issues such as labour disputes to managing employee benefits package.
It all comes down to their ability to manage conflict and be an adviser for both the employer and employees.
2. Onboarding
Employee turnover is expensive, but you can reduce this by having a strong onboarding process. What is onboarding? It’s the process that allows new hires to adjust to the social and performance aspects of their new job quickly and smoothly.
Companies are looking to hire HR professionals who can bring new recruits “onboard” to increase the chance that they will settle happily in the company for a long time.
3. Human Resources Information Software (HRIS)
HRIS is an HR software that combines a number of systems and processes to make human resource management easy. HRIS makes the workload lighter and more efficient for HR professionals. Not every company uses the same HRIS, but most softwares offer the same core functionality that helps HR organisations run smoothly.
Having an HR professional that’s experienced in using HRIS should be an advantage, especially if they had experience in using the same software as your company.
4. Performance Management
An HR professional need to have great listening skills, empathy and emotional intelligence. They will need to help the organisation’s employees to improve their effectiveness in accomplishing company’s goals.
They are responsible in monitoring employees’ performance, helping set their expectations, and rate their performance.
So not only you need someone trustworthy, you also need someone who knows how to measure an employee’s performance.
5. Teamwork and collaboration
HR professionals need to focus on finding and creating the best workplace possible, so they need to see the overall vision of the company instead of just the rules and tasks in their daily work.
6. Scheduling
As an employer, you need HR candidates with scheduling skills. They need to juggle and prioritise tasks on a team or company calendar. They also need to be able able to create a plan that allows everyone to achieve their goals.
HR professionals are the experts of scheduling.
7. Customer service
Customer service skills are a big part of resolving workplace issues. HR professionals spend so much time in conflict situations. It’s not enough to be a people-person, an HR professional need to have the discipline and skills in mediation and receiving complaints.
8. Project management.
Other than day-to-day administrative duties, HR is always in the middle of a big project. It can be writing a handbook, installing a performance management system, or any other HR projects from HRIS to employee surveys.
Similar to scheduling, a great HR candidate should also be able to manage your company’s projects.
9. Workers compensation
HR handles any incidents of work-related illnesses or injuries. Every company should have a plan of action and compensation for employees who are injured on the job that follows the state and federal laws. HR representatives need to understand the laws regarding workers’ compensation and how to help the employee and the company go through the compensation process.
As you can see, there is a lot more to human resources job skills than just being good with people. You need to hire the perfect candidate than can do either all or most of these skills so they can ensure that the heart and mind of the company can progress smoothly.
