You're running a small business. You don't have the resources to create a fancy internship program or connections with top universities. You may even be located in a town far away from the top universities.

Either way, you should consider hiring an intern. An intern can bring new ideas at a low cost. Plus, you'll have the chance to help someone else learn how to be a great employee. Here's how you should do it:

 

1. Start from the beginning 

Remember your first job and how awkward it used to be?  Don't expect your intern to naturally know all this office stuff. They might, but don't expect it. You need to place out clear guidelines that you don't need for your regular staff. Information about dress codes and starting times should be addressed from the first day. Don't wait until there is a problem.

 

2. Give interns an actual project  

The purpose of an internship is to teach interns how the actual business world operates. Let your intern accompany you on a sales call. Let them write the first draft of a project proposal. Introduce them to clients as "This is Janet. She's doing an internship with us. She's a student at the University of Malaya, and we're happy to have her." This way, your clients don't expect it to be polished and perfect.

 

3. It's okay to give interns boring tasks  

Sometimes, you have to deal with the boring and tedious tasks. It is a part of the work, after all. An intern should know that these tasks, as boring as they are, are still important. So it's okay if you need your intern to spend some time doing the boring but necessary tasks. But do focus on things that will help prepare them for the workforce.

 

4. Always give feedback 

Students are used to assignments and tests that always tell them how they are performing. It's not enough to say "Good job!". Describe what was good and what was not so good about a project to your intern. You're not micromanaging, it just means you're making sure your intern knows exactly how they're doing and what they need to improve.

 

5. Grades aren't everything

It's always great to hire an intern with excellent grades. But good grades don't tell the whole story. Look for someone who loves your field and who has enthusiasm and is likely to work with you in the future. You may find a diamond in the rough.

 

6. Talk to interns about references 

The best reference for a new grad is their internship manager. Be clear and honest with your intern over what you'll say. If they're not good, let them know that you can't give them a good reference, so they won't list you on their resume. If they have been fantastic, let them know to be sure to use you as a reference. And when giving a reference, don't hold your intern to the same standard you hold your experienced staff.
