Are Malaysian Employees Ready for Digitalisation? 89% Say Yes

Digitalisation has always been looked as a threat to the labour market, as employees think that automation may lead to mass layoffs.

However, according to Randstad Malaysia’s latest report, 9 in 10 workers in Malaysia are positive that digital technology presents them with new opportunities. The report was based on a survey from at least 400  employees and job seekers in Malaysia and revealed some of the newest workforce trends in the country.

Here are the trends:

1. Malaysians willing to learn new skills for digitalisation

89% of respondents were positive about digital technology and willing to learn new skills to adapt to the digitalised environment. 93% of respondents were also willing to personally learn these skills to ensure their employability.

2. Companies are doing more to equip employees

Aside from job seekers and employees, corporations are also moving forward in preparing for a digital workforce. The survey said 69% of respondents said their companies are investing in new technologies within artificial intelligence (AI), such as machine learning, robotics and automation.

Furthermore, more than 8 in 10 of respondents agreed these upcoming technologies will positively affect their jobs in the next five to 10 years.

But not all employers are taking the steps to better equip their staff to enhance productivity and digital-readiness. According to the survey, even though 82% of respondents think their employers should do so, only 63% said their employers are doing it.

This caused the employees to take the matter into their own hands. 76% of respondents are investing in themselves to learn more about AI.

3. Malaysia remains confident to face the future of workforce

According to the survey, it appears that respondents in Malaysia are very optimistic about the country’s future workforce. 8 out of 10 respondents said students are already being equipped with the relevant digital skills to well prepare them for the future.
