Are you a manager or a team leader? Do you want certain qualities in your employees and teammates? Then, you must provide an example for your followers.  If you don't provide examples, any speech encouraging certain policies or attitudes will seem hypocritical to your employees.  It is important to remember great examples can have great influence.

Here are 9 tips to help leaders provide an example to their followers.

1. Respect your employees

You should show up on-time for meetings, regardless if you're a meeting planner or an attendee.  Do not make your employees wait for you.  Managing your time and acknowledging the importance of the time of other employees shows mutual respect.

2. Actively listen to your employees

You should always ask questions to improve your understanding, engagement, and involvement. When you show that you are listening, it encourages dialogue, problem-solving, and mutual commitment.

3. Appropriately delegate the tasks

Assign tasks to employees who have the required talents and knowledge.  But watch out for employees who want to learn new skills and pair them up on tasks with a skilled employee who is willing to train them.

4. Build trust among your employees

One way to build trust is to have joint responsibility for the team's failures rather than trying to assign blame to an individual. Perhaps your employees did not understand your directions or assumptions were made about what was expected.  If you want your employees to be accountable, you must also let yourself be accountable too.

Give your employees a chance to execute tasks their way.

5. Take risks with your employees and work

Don't be afraid to take risks in your job and what you expect from your employees.  Reward their courage to take risks while acknowledging that today's failure may lead to improvement and better problem-solving in the future. Do not fear change and teach others not to be as well.

6. Give your employees a chance to do it their way

Let your employees do their job or resolve a problem in their own way rather than giving step-by-step instructions.  Enable your team to find creative methods that solve their problems or get the job done well and quickly.

7. Be consistent in communication

Be consistent in how you communicate and appreciate your employees.  Use company rewards to acknowledge the team that achieves high productivity or reaches its goals.  Try to use punishment infrequently, instead acknowledge what was done wrong and what type of improvement needs to happen.

8. Be an approachable leader

Do not be a barrier to your employees and teams getting their job done.  Ensure that your employees and teams know you are there to help them progress and improve any situation that comes up.

9. Work hard

People always expect their bosses to do nothing and be lazy. Let your team see you getting busy at work.  If you are unwilling to help out when the going gets tough, how can you expect your employees to do so.

These 9 tips will help you to become a boss who leads by example. Many employees nowadays are looking for employers whom they could emulate and if you're one of them, they will surely be loyal to you.
